The Great Llama Escape of '23
Okay, so maybe "great" isn't the right word. More like "utterly chaotic and surprisingly hilarious." You see, we're living the RV life – full-time, since last spring. It's been an adventure, to say the least. We've seen breathtaking sunsets, navigated terrifying mountain passes, and perfected the art of making instant coffee taste vaguely decent.
But nothing, and I mean *nothing*, prepared us for the llama incident.
We were boondocking (fancy word for camping without hookups) near this charming little alpaca farm in Peru. Picturesque, right? Wrong. Turns out, these weren't your average, docile alpacas. They were…spirited. And their cousins, the llamas, were even more so. Think fluffy, four-legged escape artists with a penchant for mischief.
We were nestled in for the night, sound asleep, when we were jolted awake by a cacophony of bleating and…thumping? I peeked out the window, half-expecting Bigfoot, only to see a llama – a rather large, very determined llama – attempting to scale the side of our RV.
(Yes, I know, I need to find a picture for this, it's on my to-do list... somewhere between 'fix leaky faucet' and 'learn Spanish'.)
My partner, bless his heart, tried to shoo it away. The llama just stared him down, a look that clearly said, "You're not my boss, human." It then proceeded to use our awning as a climbing frame, nearly ripping it to shreds before finally deciding to retreat – only to be replaced by two more of its equally brazen companions.
It was a full-blown llama siege. We eventually managed to fend them off (mostly by making loud noises and waving our arms), but not before our poor awning had suffered some significant llama-related damage. We spent the next morning patching it up, laughing hysterically at the absurdity of it all. It was the kind of unexpected, utterly ridiculous experience that only RV life could deliver.
So, if you're considering the RV lifestyle, know this: it’s not all sunsets and smooth sailing. Sometimes, it involves llamas. And maybe a little patching of your awning. But hey, at least the stories are good.
Happy trails!
